Days of Thunder Review

I love racing games…and I also hate them. Whenever a new racing game comes into the App Store, I always tell myself that after this one, I’ll have to stop buying every single one that comes after it–yet I still buy every single racing game that enters the App Store. Days of  Thunder is one of the apps I told myself I wouldn’t be getting, but the $0.99 price tag pulled me in.

Days of Thunder is a very solid game. It features a good storyline (based off of the movie “Days of Thunder”). The game features 12 tracks and six different circuits: Amateur, Qualifying, Semi-Pro, Pro, Superstar, and Endurance.

Each race starts out by showing you your rival. Your goal in the race is to get first place (obviously), but it isn’t all that easy. The computer is actually tough to beat at times. You are constantly being attacked (rammed and pushed into walls) by the other racers. You get achievement awards if you smash your rival into the wall and take him out of the race. While all that is happening, your health bar will go down. When it gets low, you have to go to the pit. As soon as your health is back up, you tap resume and go back into the race.

Whenever you take somebody out of the race, there is a coll little explosion type effect and their car goes flying through the air. Also, one other tip is to “draft” behind other cars (tail them). When you do that for a few seconds, a hammer will appear–tap it and you will get a boost and speed ahead, taking out the cars you come in contact with.

Overall, I think Days of Thunder is great. Its definitely worth $0.99, but I’m not sure if I would pay $4.99 for it. I hope the developer continues to add more depth to the game. One other thing of note is that I finished the whole game pretty quickly BUT I still keep playing it. (It has good replay value) With all that said, I give Days of Thunder 4 stars out of 5.

Days of Thunder is available in the App Store for an introductory price of $0.99 [App Store]. It will go up to $4.99 in a number of hours. It was developed by Freeverse, Inc for Paramount.
